Ingmar Bergman is among the foremost stage and film directors of the 20th century. The play that draws from his memoirs and scripts, as well as the accounts of his colleagues, portrays him as staging a play. The story touches upon the nature of artistic work and theatre, the nature of the vocation of stage director who – by defeating his own demons – attempts to kills the demons of the entire society. Yet another contribution to the SND centenary, the production intertwines Bergman’s personal issues with his parents, female partners and colleagues, and the issues of artistic input in making a stage piece. Can theatre prove cathartic to us?
