Single-act operas tend to end up in the 'second league' of our interest. For the smaller time scale they have at their disposal may be the reason why the dramatic plot of a more significant extent and message doesn’t develop in the oeuvre. Moreover, there is a need to bring together shorter operas in order for them to create a compete operatic evening. Puccini’s two single-act piece, however, promises a refreshing genre contrast between the works. While Il tabarro takes us into the world of poor boatmen on the river Seine in Paris and develops the tragic story of brutal murder out of jealousy, the other piece, Gianni Schicchi, is a comic story about the dying noble gentleman suddenly amidst the vortex of relatives hungry for the inheritance.

The original production Il trittico (Suor Angelica, Il tabarro, Gianni Schicchi) was staged as coproduction with the Opera of the National Moravian–Silesian Theatre in Ostrava.
