The novel A Gentle Creature by Dostoyevsky bears psychological potential and powerful theme of existential status, or rather security, of woman, along with conflicting variations on all aspects of an unequal relationship. The major Russian writer wrote his masterpiece in the late 1870s drawing from a news report about suicide committed by a young woman who jumped from the window holding an icon. Dostoyevsky was inspired by the “modest gentle suicide”, having fictionised the motives and background to the true event. A story of an ex-army officer, now an owner of a pond shop, suffering from inferiority complex who mentally tortured his much younger wife, raises fundamental ethical and relational issues. The complex manipulation on the part of the more powerful husband and, on the other hand, the desperate disdain by the hopeless wife that reach the tragic climax, present timeless context and raise a warning finger. SND production of A Gentle Creature evolves as retrospective confession of a widower who tries to identify the motives of the desperate deed, whilst trying to comprehend the proportion of his guilt. The potential of the master theme has already been tested by the acclaimed films by Stanislav Barabáš and Robert Bresson.
