The foremost American director Daniel Kramer was born in Ohio, He received his Bachelor’s Degree in interdisciplinary study of theatre arts at the Northwestern. He went on to study at École de Mime Corporéal Dramatique in London with Étienne Decrouxa. He extended his knowledge in specific theatre types, such as commedia dell’arte with Maestro Antonio Fava and circus art at London’s Circus Space. His career dawn included such remarkable productions as Büchner’s Woyzck and musical adaptation of Shaffer’s Hair at the Gate Theatre in Notting Hill. In 2004 he was appointed deputy artistic director of the Gate and, in 2006, creative member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. 2008 brought his debut as operatic director. For the English National Opera he made the production Punch and Juddy by Harris Birtwistle, which went on to be also performed in Geneva. Mr Kramer entered wider international public mind with Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle, which he again directed at the English National Opera. He again staged the production in St., Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre, with the conductor Valery Gergiev. The collaboration between the two continued with Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande at The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Mr Kramer’s additional major operatic productions include Bizet’s Carmen at the Flemish National Opera in Antwerp and Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde at the English National Opera. It is at the ENO that he was appointed artistic director and is currently preparing a new staging of Verdi’s Traviata. In addition to his artistic career, M Kramer lecturers at Harvard, Brown University, New York University, Northwestern University and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His Sadko that is a coproduction between the SND Opera and the Flemish National Opera in Antwerp and Gent, is Mr Kramer’s debut with the Bratislava audiences.
